11th GFO Intensive Care Day at the sports school: “Suitable premises for our event”
The annual GFO Intensive Care Day of the GFO clinics in Troisdorf took place for the eleventh time at the Hennef Sports School under the motto “From care for care”. The participants filled the auditorium to the last seat and took advantage of the varied program to gain important impulses and the latest specialist knowledge from intensive care. In this interview, Mitja Miesen, Head of Nursing Services at GFO Kliniken Troisdorf, explains the aims of the conference, the main focus of this year’s event and why the Hennef Sports School was once again chosen as the venue.

Mitja Miesen, Head of Nursing at GFO Kliniken Troisdorf.
Hennef Sports School: Mr. Miesen, what is the aim of this year’s GFO Intensive Care Day?
Miesen: The GFO Intensive Care Day is a day organized by the intensive care units of the hospitals in the network of the Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft der Franziskaner zu Olpe. The aim is to provide a specialist conference with an advanced training program for all nursing staff in the field of intensive care.
Hennef Sports School: What topics are the focus for the participating nursing staff?
Miesen: The focus will be on topics relating to complex intensive care for patients in our intensive care units – particularly those with complex clinical pictures. The focus is on risk management – what options we have to ensure that patients receive safe care. The focus is also on how we work and interact with each other as a team and how we communicate with each other to ensure a good team culture. And finally, ethics is an important aspect for us because we focus on the patients and their relatives and, of course, also have our own professional group in mind: Ethical behavior and ethical actions in dealing with our colleagues.
Sportschule Hennef: What challenges from the field of intensive care do you specifically address in workshops or lectures?
Miesen: Intensive care, just like intensive care medicine, is subject to constant change. There are always rapid, new findings and nursing science also makes a major contribution here by constantly researching current topics. The Intensive Care Day is an important instrument for passing on these findings. It is not only nursing science findings that are subject to constant change, but also technical innovation. An important part of this is our accompanying industry exhibition, where we can obtain information and advice on new technical developments.

Raccoon Henni Sieger put everyone in a good mood.
Hennef Sports School: How do patients benefit from the training measures in the long term?
Miesen: It is important that our patients always receive the highest possible quality of care. And this highest quality naturally requires that our employees in intensive care are always scientifically up to date. Further training formats in this form help to ensure that our employees are always able to absorb updated knowledge and work on providing important impetus in their daily professional environment.
Hennef Sports School: What significance does the Intensive Care Day have for professional development of your employees?
Miesen: It is important for nursing staff to continue to develop. Standing still always means a loss of motivation at the end of the day. It is important that we keep our employees curious about the issues that concern them in their daily work, that they continue to develop and that we also guide our patients into a safe care environment. It is also important that this motivation is encouraged. Participation in such training formats promotes the motivation of our employees. And it is also very important to mention that such training opportunities always give us the chance to network with colleagues, exchange ideas, engage in collegial discussions and thus learn together.
Hennef Sports School: Why did you choose the Hennef Sports School as the venue again?
Miesen: We’ve been here at the Hennef Sports School since the first GFO Intensive Care Day and now for the eleventh time – and we always enjoy coming back. Why? Because we receive a really warm welcome here and the entire team at the sports school is very committed and highly motivated, making an important contribution to the success of our event. At the same time, we also experience the sports school as having very good technical equipment, which is absolutely suitable for our format, for the instruments we need to hold our symposium here, and which suits us perfectly.
Hennef Sports School: What advantages does the Hennef Sports School offer?
Miesen: The Hennef Sports School offers us great advantages in terms of infrastructure. It is easy to reach, whether by public transport or by car. Secondly, the adjoining conference hotel means that our speakers and participants can stay overnight in the hotel, saving them a journey on the day and allowing them to attend the conference fresh in the morning. And we always have the right rooms here, equipped as we need them for our event, for our workshops and for our accompanying industry exhibition. Ultimately, all the facilities we need for our event are here on site.
